CITYWIDE HOUSING COALITION
CITYWIDE HOUSING COALITION
STOP HOMELESSNESS ~ NOW ~ FOR 2010 ~FOREVER
WHO ARE WE?
Citywide Housing Coalition is a group of organizers and
organizations from many Vancouver neighbourhoods who want
homelessness ended and affordable rental and social housing
built and preserved.
We coalesced in the Spring of 2007, when it was clear the
housing commitments in the successful bid for the 2010
Olympics, were not going to be kept. Some of us voted for the
Olympics in the 2003 referendum because we were promised
the 2010 Vancouver Olympics would leave a legacy of social
housing and that inner-city residents would experience no
undue hardship as a result of the games. As the construction
deadline for breaking ground in time for 2010 passes and no
new social housing funds are announced, we want to make
Vancouver aware of the failure of all three levels of government
and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Committee to keep their
promises. With the time we have left, we want to ensure the
needs of the people most impacted by the 2010 Olympic
Games are honestly acknowledged and fairly met.
OUR GOAL: Homes For All
In one sentence, the goal of Citywide Housing Coalition is to
have homes for all residents of Vancouver. We believe this is
achievable if the majority of Vancouver voters can be convinced
that the responsibility for ensuring an adequate supply of
affordable housing —not only for homeless people, but for
our children, our parents and grandparents—lies with all
levels of government, rather than with the private sector.
Since 1993, senior levels of government have consistently
reduced funding for housing. Not coincidentally, homelessness
in Vancouver has grown from a rough estimate of 200, in 1993,
to 2000, in 2006.
